Multimedia in Schools

Reasons to Incorporate Multimedia
Multimedia is not a babysitter; it does not take the place of a teacher. When used correctly, it can offer experiences not possible in a classroom without technology. Group projects are suddenly much easier to collaborate on with partners. When I was in school, you had to have parents take you to someone’s house or the public library; now, each student can be connected in real time while at their own house.
Ineffective Uses
Using multimedia to keep students occupied so a teacher can grade papers is not an effective use. Using technology as a reward for only those that finish quickly is not acceptable. Displaying PowerPoint slides stuffed with text while still lecturing is also not okay, as Phillips (2014) demonstrates in his Ted X talk, which everyone should really watch. Multimedia should be an enhancement of the teacher’s effort, not a replacement for it.
